Captain of the Enterprise on its five-year mission and later an admiral, Kirk became the archetype of the bold, humane starship commander.
James T. Kirk is the captain of the starship Enterprise in the original series and the franchise's archetypal starship commander. Bold, charismatic and fiercely loyal to his crew, he leads missions of exploration and diplomacy that often end with him talking a stronger foe into a corner or out of a fight.
His closest bonds are with his first officer Spock and his chief medical officer Leonard McCoy, a trio whose friendship defines the series. In the feature films he faces his old enemy Khan, loses his son David, and helps save Earth from a probe, with Spock's death and return forming a central arc. He later appears alongside the next generation's captain in a crossover film, and a different version of him is seen in the rebooted film timeline.
Kirk's legacy is that of the confident, humane explorer who bends rules in the name of principle. His romantic entanglements, his refusal to accept a no-win scenario and his command style became a template that later captains are measured against.
