An inexperienced Enterprise navigator who cracks under pressure during Balok's countdown and later volunteers to stay with the First Federation.
Lieutenant Dave Bailey is a young officer whom Kirk promoted, perhaps too quickly, to navigator. In The Corbomite Maneuver, when the enormous ship Fesarius traps the Enterprise and its commander Balok announces that the crew will be destroyed, Bailey loses his composure on the bridge and is relieved of duty.
After Kirk's corbomite bluff succeeds and Balok is revealed to be testing the crew, Bailey regains his nerve. He volunteers to stay aboard Balok's ship as a cultural envoy, a chance to learn about the First Federation and to grow as an officer. He was played by Anthony Call.
