Captain Kirk's yeoman and later a communications officer aboard Excelsior.
Janice Rand is Captain Kirk's yeoman in the first season of the original series, played by Grace Lee Whitney. She handles the captain's reports and supplies and is one of the most visible crew members in the early episodes.
In The Enemy Within, a transporter malfunction splits Kirk into two beings, and his violent half assaults her, an episode that shows her under great strain. She leaves the series partway through the first season.
Rand returns in the films. In The Motion Picture she is the Enterprise's transporter chief, she makes a brief appearance in The Search for Spock, and in The Undiscovered Country she is the communications officer of the USS Excelsior under Captain Sulu. She appears aboard Excelsior again in the Voyager episode Flashback, set during the same period, giving her a career that stretches across decades of the franchise.
