Battle of Axanar

Garth of Izar's legendary victory

A celebrated Starfleet victory won by Garth of Izar, studied by generations of cadets and later followed by the peace mission in which the young James T. Kirk took part.

The Battle of Axanar was a famous Starfleet victory won by Fleet Captain Garth of Izar. Garth's tactics at Axanar became required reading at Starfleet Academy, and he was regarded as one of the greatest starship captains in Federation history.
The battle is referred to in the original series episode Whom Gods Destroy. James T. Kirk recalls visiting Garth's ship as a cadet and admiring him as a hero. Years later Garth was badly injured, learned the art of cellular metamorphosis from the people of Antos while recovering, and his mind broke, so he was confined to an asylum on Elba II. When Kirk and Spock arrive there, Garth has taken over the facility and tries to seize the Enterprise, before he is overcome and treated.
The earlier episode Court Martial notes that Kirk received a commendation for his service in the Axanar Peace Mission, which followed the conflict. The battle is a brief but evocative piece of Federation history, and it inspired the fan-made production Prelude to Axanar, which imagines the war in which Garth earned his reputation.
