The 2259 Kelvin-timeline battle near Earth in which Khan seized the warship USS Vengeance and crashed it into San Francisco, while Kirk gave his life to save the Enterprise.
Admiral Marcus had secretly built the USS Vengeance, a powerful warship meant for war with the Klingons. In 2259 he used it to attack the Enterprise near Earth to cover up his plans. Kirk and Khan crossed to the Vengeance together, but Khan turned on Kirk, killed Marcus and took control of the ship.
Spock beamed over the torpedoes Khan wanted, but he had removed Khan's crew and armed the warheads. They exploded aboard the Vengeance and crippled it. The badly damaged Enterprise began falling toward Earth, and Kirk entered the radiation-flooded warp core chamber to realign the core, saving the ship but dying from the exposure. Khan then crashed the Vengeance into San Francisco.
Spock chased Khan through the city and, with Uhura's help, took him alive. McCoy used Khan's blood to bring Kirk back to life, and Khan was returned to cryogenic sleep. About a year later the Enterprise set out on a five-year mission of exploration.
