The Kalandans were an advanced humanoid people who built an artificial planet as an outpost. A disease killed the Kalandans stationed there, but the automated defenses kept running, guarding the world for thousands of years.
In That Which Survives, a landing party from the Enterprise was stranded on the planet while the ship was flung far across space. The defense system projected an image of Losira, the outpost's last commander, who could kill anyone she touched by disrupting the cells of a chosen target. Kirk's party destroyed the computer, ending the threat.
