Samuel T. Cogley

Attorney who defended Kirk at his court martial

An old-fashioned lawyer who preferred paper books to computers, and who defended Kirk when his own ship's records accused him.

Samuel T. Cogley is an attorney who keeps a room full of printed law books and distrusts computer records. Recommended to Kirk by the prosecutor Areel Shaw, he takes up Kirk's defence when the captain is accused of negligence in the apparent death of Ben Finney.
Cogley argues that the accused has the right to face his accuser, even when that accuser is a machine, and this leads to the discovery that the records were altered and that Finney is alive. Afterwards Cogley takes on Finney as his next client. He was played by Elisha Cook Jr.
