American actor who played Gary Mitchell, Kirk's friend turned godlike menace, in the second pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before.
Gary Lockwood (born 1937) is an American actor best known for playing astronaut Frank Poole in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. He had earlier starred in Gene Roddenberry's series The Lieutenant.
In Where No Man Has Gone Before (1966), the second Star Trek pilot, Lockwood played Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell, Kirk's old friend, who develops vast psychic powers after the Enterprise crosses the galactic barrier. As Mitchell grows increasingly dangerous, Kirk is forced to fight and kill him, and the episode helped NBC commit to the series.
