Veridian III incident

The loss of the Enterprise-D and the death of James T. Kirk

In 2371 Tolian Soran's attempt to re-enter the Nexus led to the destruction of the Enterprise-D and the death of James T. Kirk on Veridian III.

In 2371 the scientist Tolian Soran, who had been pulled from the Nexus in 2293, was determined to return to it. Because the energy ribbon could not be safely approached by ship, he began destroying stars to change its path. After destroying the star of the Amargosa system, he set out to destroy the star of the Veridian system, which would also kill the millions of people living on Veridian IV.
Soran was helped by the Klingon sisters Lursa and B'Etor, who used a camera hidden in Geordi La Forge's VISOR to learn the Enterprise-D's shield frequency. Their Bird-of-Prey badly damaged the Enterprise before it was destroyed, and the resulting warp core breach forced the crew to separate the saucer, which crash-landed on Veridian III.
Picard was swept into the Nexus, where he found Kirk, who had been missing since 2293. The two left the Nexus together and stopped Soran's launch, but Kirk was killed in the fight. Picard buried him on Veridian III.
