A former Starfleet officer who became First Citizen of the Roman-style empire on planet 892-IV after his ship was wrecked there.
Merik was the captain of the survey vessel SS Beagle, lost six years before the Enterprise discovered its debris near planet 892-IV. The planet had developed a civilisation much like ancient Rome, and Merik had betrayed his own crew, sending many of them into the arena while he rose to become First Citizen.
When Kirk, Spock and McCoy are captured and forced towards the arena, Merik's conscience returns. He takes a communicator and signals the Enterprise to beam them up, and is stabbed by the proconsul Claudius Marcus. He was played by William Smithers.
