Cyrano Jones was an independent trader who dealt in exotic goods. In The Trouble with Tribbles, he arrived at Deep Space Station K-7 with a supply of tribbles, small furry creatures that purred and charmed nearly everyone. He gave one to Uhura, and they soon multiplied out of control, filling the station and the Enterprise.
The tribbles turned out to be useful, revealing that a shipment of grain had been poisoned and exposing a Klingon spy disguised as a human. As a penalty, Kirk had Jones take on the job of removing all the tribbles from the station. In the animated series he returned with tribbles that had been altered so they did not multiply, though they grew very large instead. Deep Space Nine later revisited the original episode, with the Defiant's crew travelling back in time to K-7.
Cyrano Jones is a beloved comic figure, and his tribbles are among the most famous creatures in all of Star Trek.
