In 2263 the USS Enterprise answered a plea for help that led it into an uncharted nebula. Waiting there was Krall's swarm, a vast fleet of small linked ships that tore through the Enterprise's hull and cut off its warp nacelles.
Kirk ordered the crew to abandon ship. The saucer section crashed onto Altamid, and most of the crew were captured by Krall. The loss of the Enterprise left Kirk's officers stranded and scattered on the planet.
