Montgomery Scott, known as Scotty, is the chief engineer of the Enterprise in the original series. Scottish, resourceful and proud of his ship, he performs miracles with the engines and often claims that he cannot change the laws of physics, only to do so anyway in a pinch.
He serves under Kirk across the series and the films, remaining loyal even as Starfleet changes. In The Next Generation, he is discovered alive after years trapped in a transporter beam, and he spends time aboard the Enterprise-D before setting out to find a new life. A different version appears in the rebooted film timeline.
Scotty's can-do attitude and loyalty to his captain made him a beloved figure, and his work set the template for the franchise's engineers, who solve problems with ingenuity and heart.
