The Gideonites live on Gideon, a planet whose environment is so healthy that its people live extraordinarily long lives and rarely fall ill. With almost no deaths and a cultural reverence for life, the population has grown until the people have no space to move, yet they reject contraception.
Their leader Hodin lured Kirk to a replica of the Enterprise to obtain the disease he had once survived. Hodin's daughter Odona volunteered to be infected, hoping her illness would introduce death back into Gideon and ease their crisis.
