A pompous Federation official who demands that the Enterprise guard his shipment of quadrotriticale grain at Deep Space Station K-7.
Nilz Baris is the Federation Undersecretary for Agricultural Affairs in the Quadrant, and the official responsible for the Federation's development plan for Sherman's Planet. In The Trouble with Tribbles he summons the Enterprise to Deep Space Station K-7 with a priority call, then expects Kirk to protect the station's stores of quadrotriticale, a grain bound for the planet.
Baris's self-importance annoys Kirk at every turn, and the grain is poisoned anyway. It is the tribbles, eating the grain and dying, that reveal the sabotage, and Baris's own assistant turns out to be the Klingon spy responsible. He was played by William Schallert.
