A former resistance fighter who became first officer of Deep Space Nine.
Kira Nerys is a Bajoran former resistance fighter who serves as Bajor's liaison officer and first officer on Deep Space Nine with the rank of major. She fought the Cardassian occupation from her early teens, and she begins the series wary of the Federation and of Commander Sisko, whom she later comes to respect both as a commander and as the Emissary of the Prophets.
Her romances over the series include Vedek Bareil, the Bajoran leader Shakaar Edon and, in the final seasons, Odo. When the Dominion seizes the station she helps organize resistance from within, and in the last season she is sent to help Damar's Cardassian rebels fight the Dominion, working alongside Garak and Odo. She also carries the O'Briens' son Kirayoshi to term after an accident forces the baby to be transferred to her.
By the end of the series Kira holds the rank of colonel, and she takes command of the station after Sisko departs.
