A mirror-universe double of Bareil arrives on the station.
A mirror universe version of Vedek Bareil, the Bajoran Kira loved and lost, arrives through a transporter and takes Kira hostage. Easily subdued, he persuades her that he is only fleeing the cruel Alliance and wants to remain in this universe. Sisko releases him with a warning that this is not the man she knew. Kira helps him settle in, and the two become lovers.
In secret he is working with the Intendant, Kira's mirror double, on a plan to steal a Bajoran Orb and use it to gain power at home. Warned by Quark, Kira catches him at the shrine, and the Intendant holds her at gunpoint. Bareil, moved by a vision of a life with Kira shown to him by the Orb, stuns the Intendant but knows he could not live up to it, and returns with her to their universe. The sixth-season episode revisits Kira's grief for Bareil through the mirror universe.
