A group of refugees from the Gamma Quadrant arrives on the station.
Thousands of Skrreeans, a people of farmers driven from their home by conquerors and ultimately by the Dominion, come through the wormhole seeking their legendary homeland, Kentanna. Kira befriends their leader Haneek, but tension grows between the refugees and the station's residents.
The Skrreeans decide that Bajor is Kentanna, but the Bajoran government, fearing a famine, refuses to take them and suggests another planet instead. Haneek's son Tumak tries to fly to Bajor in a damaged ship and is killed. The Skrreeans leave for the other world, and Haneek tells a shaken Kira that her farmers could have helped feed Bajor.
