In 2374 the Cardassians and their Dominion allies began installing unmanned orbital weapon platforms to defend the Chin'toka system. The platforms were heavily armed and drew their power from a single generator.
In Tears of the Prophets, a fleet of Federation, Klingon and Romulan ships attacked Chin'toka just as the platforms came online, and many allied ships were destroyed. Garak worked out that the platforms depended on a central power source. With Sisko distracted, Kira took command of the Defiant and destroyed the generator, leaving the platforms powerless.
