Data

Operations officer, android

An android built by Dr. Noonien Soong who strove to understand humanity.

Data is an android serving as the operations officer aboard the USS Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Built by the scientist Noonien Soong, he is a being of extraordinary strength and intellect who longs to understand and experience humanity.
Over the series he explores art, friendship, humor and love, often with touching and amusing results. He forms deep bonds with Jean-Luc Picard, Geordi La Forge and others, and he struggles with his brother Lore, who is a darker android, and with the emotion chip that he later receives. He also builds a daughter, Lal, and faces a trial that establishes his right to be a person. He appears in the four Next Generation films, and in the last of them he sacrifices himself to save Picard. He later returns in Star Trek: Picard.
Data is remembered as one of the franchise's most beloved figures, a quiet hero who teaches us what it means to be human.
