Jarada

Reclusive species demanding exact protocol

A reclusive and insect-like species, heard but never seen, who require a greeting delivered in their language with absolute precision before any contact.

The Jarada are a reclusive species that insist on exact protocol when dealing with outsiders. A Federation attempt at contact years before the Enterprise era had gone badly when the greeting was delivered imperfectly, and relations stalled for a long time.
In The Big Goodbye, Jean-Luc Picard spent days rehearsing a complex greeting in the Jaradan language. A Jaradan probe scan damaged the holodeck, trapping Picard and his party inside a Dixon Hill program. Picard escaped in time and delivered the greeting correctly, and the Jarada, heard only through their voices, accepted it.
