A mediator who communicates through a chorus faces a crisis.
The Enterprise carries Riva, a famed mediator who has been deaf since birth and communicates through a Chorus of three people who speak and act for him. He is trying to bring peace to the war-torn planet Solais. When the Chorus is killed in an attack, Riva loses his voice, and the peace process seems doomed.
The episode is about communication in a deeper sense, and Data is brought in to help Riva find a new way to be heard. Though it is regarded as a quiet entry in the second season, it is a thoughtful story about finding a voice.
