Dr. Farallon is a scientist overseeing a particle fountain, an experimental mining technology on Tyrus VIIA. To help with repairs she developed the exocomps, small machines able to analyze a problem, replicate the right tools and learn from experience.
In The Quality of Life, Data becomes convinced that the exocomps are alive when they refuse dangerous tasks. Farallon rejects his claims because of the pressure on her project. After the exocomps volunteer to save Picard and La Forge, Farallon concedes she cannot be sure they are not sentient and promises not to abuse them again.
