The USS Essex was a Daedalus-class starship of the 22nd century, commanded by Captain Bryce Shumar. It was lost with all hands in 2167 in the Mab-Bu system.
In 2368 the Enterprise-D answered an old distress signal near the moon Mab-Bu VI, where entities claiming to be the spirits of the Essex crew took over the bodies of Data, Deanna Troi and Miles O'Brien. The beings were actually criminals imprisoned on the moon centuries earlier, who used the dead crew's identity as a ruse to seize the Enterprise and escape. Picard bluffed them into returning to their prison.
