Colonel Stephen Richey was an astronaut whose spacecraft had left Earth in 2037. In The Royale an Enterprise away team found his remains in a room of the Hotel Royale, a perfect copy of an old Earth hotel and casino built on a barren planet.
Richey's diary explained that aliens had accidentally killed his crew. Meaning to make amends, they created the hotel for him, basing it on a pulp novel he had with him, but Richey found the world they built unbearable and lived out his days there. Riker, Worf and Data escaped by following the novel's plot.
