The USS Enterprise-D was a Galaxy-class starship built at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on Mars and commissioned in 2363. It was one of the largest ships in Starfleet, carried civilians and families alongside its crew, and could separate its saucer from the stardrive section.
Under Captain Jean-Luc Picard, with William Riker as first officer, the crew included Data, Worf, Geordi La Forge, Deanna Troi, Beverly Crusher and, in the early years, Tasha Yar and Wesley Crusher. The ship encountered Q, made the Federation's first contact with the Borg and had many dealings with the Klingons, Romulans and Cardassians.
In 2371, during the events of Star Trek: Generations, a Bird-of-Prey flown by the Klingon sisters Lursa and B'Etor exploited a weakness in the ship's shields. The Enterprise destroyed the Bird-of-Prey, but the damage caused a warp core breach. The crew evacuated to the saucer, which was thrown clear by the explosion and crash-landed on Veridian III.
