A holodeck malfunction sets Worf in a Western with Data in every role.
With the Enterprise-D two days early for a rendezvous, Geordi La Forge and Data test whether Data could serve as a backup for the main computer, while Worf reluctantly joins his son Alexander and later Troi in a holodeck Western set in Deadwood. They play lawmen holding the outlaw Eli Hollander. A power surge during the test causes data swaps, so Data slips into frontier slang while the holodeck characters begin to take on Data's appearance and abilities.
With the safeties offline and no way to end the program, Worf must play it through to protect Alexander from Eli's father, Frank, now an android-strength gunman. He improvises a personal force field and rescues his son, though the program ends only after the tavern owner Annie, now also resembling Data, thanks him. Geordi and Data purge the memory swap to restore things. Patrick Stewart directed this sixth-season comedy, and its finale nods to riding off into the sunset.
