The Borg travel back to 2063 to stop humanity's first warp flight, and the Enterprise-E follows.
Star Trek: First Contact, released in 1996 and directed by Jonathan Frakes, sends Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-E against the Borg. When a Borg cube heads for Earth, the Federation fleet defeats it, but a smaller sphere escapes and goes back in time to the twenty-first century. The Enterprise follows it in order to protect history.
In the past, the crew finds the Borg attacking Zefram Cochrane's home town as he prepares for the first warp flight, which will lead to humanity's first contact with the Vulcans. The Borg assimilate parts of the ship, and Picard must face his own painful history with the Collective. Data is tempted by the Borg Queen, and Picard's anger and obsession grow as the fight goes on. The film explores revenge, the hope of the future and what it means to be human.
The film was warmly received and is often counted among the best of the series. It was the first Next Generation film to focus entirely on the new crew and the first to make a major change to the ship, the Enterprise-E. It is an important moment in the Borg story and in Picard's story.
