An older Starfleet ship trapped in a temporal causality loop and found by the Enterprise-D.
The USS Bozeman was a Soyuz-class Starfleet ship commanded by Captain Morgan Bateson. In 2278 it vanished while passing through the Typhon Expanse, and it was not seen again for about ninety years.
In the Next Generation episode Cause and Effect, the Enterprise-D becomes caught in a temporal causality loop in the same region. Again and again the Bozeman emerges from a distortion and collides with the Enterprise, destroying both ships, and the loop restarts. The crew begins to feel strong sensations of deja vu, and they realise what is happening.
Data manages to send a message into the next loop, which appears as repeated images of the number three. He reads it as a pointer to Riker's suggestion, which uses Riker's three rank pips, and the Enterprise uses its tractor beam to push the Bozeman aside, avoiding the collision. Captain Bateson then learns that he has lost ninety years.
