In 2379 the Enterprise-E fought Shinzon's Scimitar in the Bassen Rift, where Data sacrificed himself to stop the ship's thalaron weapon.
In 2379 the Enterprise-E tried to reach Federation reinforcements but was caught by the Scimitar in the Bassen Rift, where communications did not work. The Scimitar's cloak let it fire while unseen, and the Enterprise suffered heavy damage. Two Romulan warbirds under Commander Donatra joined the fight on Picard's side but were badly damaged.
Picard rammed the Scimitar with the Enterprise. Shinzon began to fire his thalaron weapon, which would have destroyed everyone aboard both ships. Picard went to the Scimitar alone to stop him, and Shinzon was killed.
Data followed and used a portable transporter to send Picard back to the Enterprise. Data then fired on the thalaron generator, destroying the Scimitar and himself. Riker left soon afterward to command the USS Titan, and the crew mourned Data while B-4 remained aboard.
