The USS Sutherland was a Nebula-class Starfleet ship, a design with a large saucer and a raised mission pod. In 2368, during the Klingon civil war, Picard gave Data temporary command of it as part of a fleet that formed a blockade along the Romulan border.
The Sutherland's first officer, Lieutenant Commander Christopher Hobson, openly doubted that an android should command a starship, and the crew was slow to accept Data. The blockade used a tachyon detection grid to spot Romulan ships trying to smuggle supplies to the Duras family, who were fighting Gowron.
When the Romulans disrupted the grid, Picard ordered the fleet to regroup, but Data disobeyed and kept the Sutherland in place. He fired a torpedo that released a burst of tachyons, revealing the cloaked Romulan ships, which then withdrew. Picard accepted Data's decision, which ended Romulan support for the Duras and won Data the respect of his crew. The story is told in Redemption.
