A Federation institution for scientific and technological research.
The Daystrom Institute is a Federation scientific and technological research centre devoted to the advancement of computing, robotics and artificial intelligence. It is named after Dr. Richard Daystrom, a brilliant scientist whose work on computer systems made him a legend, and its work continues to be of great importance to Starfleet.
The institute is home to leading researchers who work on some of the most advanced technology in the Federation. Its projects have included work on artificial life, and it has often been involved in debates about the rights and treatment of artificial beings, which are an ongoing theme in the franchise.
The Daystrom name appears in several episodes, including The Ultimate Computer from the original series, in which Daystrom's M-5 computer goes wrong. Dr. Bruce Maddox, a cyberneticist, features in the Next Generation episode The Measure of a Man, where he wishes to disassemble Data, and the institute is again mentioned in Picard, where it plays a part in the story of synthetic life.
