Data is believed to be killed in a shuttle accident, but in fact he has been kidnapped by Kivas Fajo, a wealthy collector who wants to add the android to his private collection of rare objects. Fajo holds Data captive and treats him as a possession, while the Enterprise searches for answers.
Data is pushed to the limit as he tries to resist the collector and find a way to escape. The story is a tense psychological drama, with a strong performance by the guest villain. It also touches on the idea of an artificial being's right to be a person, a theme familiar from earlier in the series, and the climax shows how far Data will go to protect others.
