American actor who played Professor Moriarty, the self-aware holodeck villain of The Next Generation.
Daniel Davis, an American actor born in 1945, played Professor James Moriarty, the Sherlock Holmes villain who gains consciousness after Geordi La Forge asks the holodeck for an adversary capable of defeating Data. Moriarty first appeared in Elementary, Dear Data and returned in Ship in a Bottle, in which he traps the crew inside a simulation to force his release.
Davis later reprised the role in Star Trek: Picard. He is widely known as Niles the butler on the sitcom The Nanny.
