A long-lived people who adopted logic after a violent history and became founding members of the Federation.
The Vulcans are a humanoid species from the planet Vulcan, easily recognised by their pointed ears and upswept eyebrows. They are physically stronger than humans and have a longer lifespan, and their world is a hot, dry desert planet with a high gravity. Their society is built on logic and discipline.
Long ago, Vulcans were violent and passionate, but they followed the teachings of Surak, who taught the control of emotion through logic. Their culture values peace and the pursuit of knowledge, and Vulcans practise the mind meld, a form of mental contact. They keep their emotions in check, and their personal discipline is well known.
The Vulcans made first contact with humanity after Zefram Cochrane's warp flight, and they became a founding member of the Federation. The most famous Vulcan is Spock, the half human first officer of the Enterprise, while Sarek, T'Pol and Tuvok are also notable. The Vulcans appear in every series, and their ideals have long provided a counterpoint to the human spirit.
