At Gol on Vulcan, a group of masters oversees Kolinahr, a demanding discipline in which an adept seeks to shed all emotion and achieve pure logic. After his first five-year mission, Spock withdrew to Gol to undergo the ritual.
In 2273, as he neared completion, Spock sensed a vast consciousness reaching across space from the entity later known as V'Ger. His human half answered it, and he was unable to complete the ritual. He left Gol and rejoined the Enterprise, where his encounter with V'Ger helped him accept both sides of his nature.
