Vulcan

Homeworld of the Vulcans

A desert world and a founding member of the Federation.

Vulcan is the homeworld of the Vulcans, a hot, dry and rocky planet with a red sky and many deserts. Its gravity is stronger than that of Earth, and its landscape is dotted with mountains and ancient temples. It is a founding member of the Federation, and a centre of science and philosophy.
Its people were once warlike, but the teachings of Surak led them to embrace logic and to suppress their emotions. The planet has a long history of scholarship, and Vulcan monasteries, including those on Mount Seleya, preserve ancient knowledge. The Vulcan Science Academy is a prestigious institution which trains many scientists.
Vulcan is the birthplace of Spock and the home of Sarek and Amanda. It appears in many episodes and films, including Star Trek: The Motion Picture and the film Star Trek, in which the planet is destroyed by Nero. In the Kelvin timeline, the survivors work to rebuild their civilisation. In Enterprise, the Vulcan High Command plays a large role in early human exploration.
