The Enterprise falls into a trap set by the pirate captain Angel, who demands that T'Pring free a Vulcan prisoner revealed to be Spock's half-brother Sybok.
Starfleet counselor Aspen joins the Enterprise on a trip to aid colonists harassed by pirates. When the pirate ship Serene Squall attacks and its crew boards the Enterprise, Pike and a boarding party are stranded on the pirate vessel, where he uses his cooking and his wits to start a mutiny and take control.
Aspen is unmasked as Angel, the pirate captain, who threatens Spock's life unless T'Pring releases a Vulcan prisoner she is rehabilitating. Spock tries to stop the exchange by pretending to break off his engagement and claiming a relationship with Chapel. Pike's team locks the Enterprise's controls remotely, Angel escapes, and the prisoner is revealed to be Spock's half-brother Sybok.
