Burnham leads a rescue for Sarek after a logic extremist's attack, while Admiral Cornwell takes his place at peace talks and is captured.
On his way to secret talks with a Klingon house, Sarek is badly injured when a Vulcan logic extremist sets off a bomb aboard his ship. Burnham senses his distress through a link he formed with her when she was a child, and Lorca sends her, Tyler and Cadet Tilly to find him in a nebula.
Through the link Burnham relives a painful memory and learns that Sarek, forced to choose, sacrificed her place in the Vulcan Expeditionary Group. She reaches him and he survives. Admiral Katrina Cornwell, concerned about Lorca's fitness, spends the night with him and then tells him she plans to have him relieved. She attends the talks in Sarek's place, but they are an ambush and she is taken prisoner. Joe Menosky and Ted Sullivan wrote the episode and Douglas Aarniokoski directed.
