The aging Vulcan ambassador suffers a disease that affects everyone near him.

The famed Vulcan ambassador Sarek arrives on the Enterprise to finalize a major treaty, a mission that he considers the capstone of his career. He is Spock's father, which gives the visit an extra weight for fans. But his behavior grows erratic, and the crew realizes that he is suffering from a rare degenerative condition that causes emotional instability.
With his career and the treaty at risk, Picard offers to share his mind with Sarek through a Vulcan mind meld, taking on the ambassador's emotions and holding them for him. The episode is a moving piece about aging, dignity and friendship, and it is one of the best-loved of the third season. The image of Picard enduring Sarek's pain stands out.
