On the way to Vulcan, Discovery answers a call from the damaged USS Enterprise. Captain Christopher Pike takes temporary command, with orders to investigate seven red bursts that appeared across the galaxy. The first leads to an asteroid where engineer Jett Reno has kept the survivors of the crashed USS Hiawatha alive. During the rescue Burnham sees a red, angel-like figure.
Aboard the Enterprise, Burnham searches the quarters of her foster brother Spock, who has taken leave, and finds logs showing that he had been seeing the same figure and the signals. Alex Kurtzman directed the second season premiere, which is set in 2257.
