The Vulcan captain who observes Enterprise's study of a comet and becomes the target of Archer's attempt to break the ice.
Vanik commands the Vulcan starship Ti'Mur. In Breaking the Ice he arrives while Enterprise is studying a comet rich in the mineral eisilium, and declines Archer's offer of a joint survey, saying his crew would rather just observe. His presence irritates Archer, who feels the Vulcans are looking over his shoulder.
Archer invites Vanik to dinner aboard Enterprise in the hope of easing tensions, with little success. The encounter shows the uneasy relationship between Starfleet and the Vulcans early in Enterprise's mission, while an encrypted message from Vanik's ship concerns T'Pol's arranged marriage.
