A Vulcan survey ship was passing through the Sol system on April 5, 2063, when it detected the warp signature of Zefram Cochrane's Phoenix. The Vulcans had not considered humanity worth contacting until that flight showed that it had reached warp.
In Star Trek: First Contact, the crew of the Enterprise-E made sure the Phoenix flight went ahead after the Borg tried to stop it. The survey ship landed near Bozeman, Montana, and its crew greeted Cochrane in the first official contact between humans and an alien species.
