Tom Paris is the helmsman of Voyager, a gifted pilot who begins the series as a convicted former Starfleet officer recruited from a prison colony. Robert Duncan McNeill plays him as a smart-alecky, charming and sometimes reckless man with a lot to prove.

He earns Captain Janeway's trust by performing bravely in repeated crises, develops a close friendship with Harry Kim and eventually falls in love with B'Elanna Torres, whom he marries.
