The square-jawed hero of The Adventures of Captain Proton, Tom Paris's black-and-white holodeck serial modelled on 1930s science fiction films.
Captain Proton is the role Tom Paris plays in his own holodeck creation, The Adventures of Captain Proton, a program built in the style of vintage movie serials, complete with black-and-white visuals, cliffhanger chapters and cardboard-looking rocket ships. The program appears from Night onward, with Harry Kim as Proton's sidekick Buster Kincaid.
Proton's arch-enemy is the villainous Doctor Chaotica, who rules from a fortress protected by a lightning shield. In Bride of Chaotica!, a malfunction leaves the program running while photonic aliens from another dimension mistake it for reality and go to war with Chaotica, forcing Janeway to play Queen Arachnia.
The serial became a recurring diversion for the crew. It reflects Paris's fondness for twentieth-century pop culture, alongside his love of old cars and television.
