Voyager's crew is stranded on a primitive planet while the Kazon hold the ship.
Stranded on a harsh volcanic world, the crew struggles with hostile natives, dangerous creatures and a lack of food and shelter. Hogan is killed by a giant creature, and Chakotay eventually earns the natives' respect by saving one of their children.
Aboard Voyager, the Doctor and Lon Suder, a Betazoid who once killed a crewmate, are the only ones left free. As Paris returns with Talaxian help, Suder sabotages the ship's phasers so they overload when the Kazon fire them, and he is killed in the fighting. The Kazon abandon the ship, Seska dies of her injuries, and Culluh leaves with her child. Voyager then returns to retrieve the stranded crew.
