A custom shuttlecraft designed by Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres and built aboard Voyager.
The Delta Flyer was an advanced shuttle designed and built aboard the USS Voyager by Lieutenant Tom Paris and Chief Engineer B'Elanna Torres, using spare parts and technology picked up in the Delta Quadrant. It was meant to be faster and sturdier than Starfleet's standard shuttlecraft, and it carried a small crew of up to several officers in a shape that resembled a compact arrow.
Because Voyager was so far from Federation space, the Flyer became a vital tool for missions that put the main ship at risk. It was used for scouting, rescues, negotiations and sometimes for missions deep into hostile territory. Paris was its usual pilot, with Torres, Seven of Nine, Commander Chakotay and others joining the crew depending on the mission. It could carry shielding and weapons that rivalled those of the starship itself.
The craft became a symbol of the crew's ingenuity and ability to improvise with limited means. It was rebuilt and refitted when the first design suffered damage, and it served throughout the later part of Voyager's long trip home. The Flyer remained one of the more popular small craft of the franchise.
