Lieutenant Commander Cavit was Voyager's original first officer, killed when the Caretaker's displacement wave hurled the ship into the Delta Quadrant.
Cavit served as first officer aboard USS Voyager at the start of its mission to find a missing Maquis ship in the Badlands. A by-the-book officer, he made no secret of his discomfort at having Tom Paris, a disgraced former officer and convicted Maquis collaborator, aboard as an observer.
In Caretaker, Cavit was among those killed when the Caretaker's displacement wave tore through the ship and pulled it 70,000 light-years across the galaxy. His death, along with those of the helm officer, chief engineer and medical staff, left the command structure gutted and eventually opened the way for Chakotay to become Janeway's first officer.
