B'Elanna tries to find her path in an old tradition.
On the Klingon Day of Honor, B'Elanna Torres is unhappy at having to work with Seven of Nine and is pushing Tom Paris away. After an accident forces her to eject the warp core, she and Paris go to recover it in a shuttle, but the Caatati, a needy people devastated by the Borg, take the core first and destroy the shuttle, leaving the pair stranded in space suits.
Voyager reaches the Caatati, who want supplies and also demand Seven of Nine because she was once Borg. Seven uses her knowledge to build them a thorium generator that solves their energy problem, and they give back the core. In space, with their air nearly gone, Torres admits that she loves Paris before Voyager beams them aboard. The fourth-season episode explores Torres's struggle with her Klingon identity and moves her relationship with Paris forward.
