Voyager receives letters from home, with a catch.
Starfleet, now aware that Voyager is alive, sends letters from home through a network of ancient relay arrays run by the Hirogen. As Neelix hands out the mail, the crew learn that Tuvok has a new addition to his family, that Janeway's fiance Mark has married someone else after giving her up for dead, and that most of the Maquis have been killed or jailed by the Cardassians and their Dominion allies, news that hits Chakotay and Torres hard.
The Hirogen demand that Voyager stay off their network. When Seven of Nine and Tuvok take a shuttle to the nearest array to clear the signal, the Hirogen capture them and plan to take them as trophies. Voyager rescues them by exposing the array's singularity, but the network is destroyed and the remaining letters, including one for Tom Paris from his father, are lost. The fourth-season episode properly introduces the Hirogen, who live for the hunt.
